Music Review: Deface the Music

If you're looking for a long lost album from The Beatles that you've never heard before, you should check out Deface the Music, Utopia's terrific 1980 disc. Although it's now only available used or as an import, this is definitely worth checking out if you're a Fab Four fan. The album presents 13 songs which seem plucked right out of The Beatles catalog. The tunes sound like something John Lennon or Paul McCartney wrote, but they're not. They feature familiar arrangements by The Beatles, except they're fake. It's like a greatest hits album from The Beatles, with songs from all the different stages of their recording career, from their I Want to Hold Your Hand phase to a Sgt. Peppers sound-alike. This comes courtesy of Todd Rundgren, Utopia's front man, who admired The Beatles so much that he wanted to create his own tribute disc. Only this isn't mere tribute; these are meticulous fake pop songs that are (almost) just as good as anything The Beatles ever recorded. The Rutles performed a similar feat, only as parody and satire. But here, on Deface the Music, Utopia gives us terrific songs you'll want to add to your MP3 The Beatles playlist.
