Stream Death Cab's Narrow Stairs

thumbnail: Stream Death Cab's Narrow Stairs

From the album title punchline contest to the Construction Paper Album art nicknames to the cute girl/creepy stalking video, the build-up to Narrow Stairs' release day has seemed longer than a four-minute instrumental intro. And now web rippers and law-abiding music consumers alike can now all listen to and discuss DCFC's latest with clear eyes, full hearts (can't lose). Pretty sure everybody likes it better than Plans (right?). Fans of The Photo Album, We Have The Facts..., etc. will see some moments of those good times in "Cath" and "Your New Twin Sized Bed,"; DCFC lovers of the major label days won't find anything too mean to their ears; and as most have realized/read, there are some Walla attempts at fleshing out the sounds, bringing in the tablas, turning the amps to 11 (it's a mixed bag). The more knobs tweaked, though, the more it becomes clear that this is a band that will live and die by Ben's hand: Walla, Harmer, McGerr are all right in the pocket, but this is Gibbard's ball. When he gets it right, and he does here on at least a majority of tracks, Ben can twist a phrase at just the right angles, turn a melody to just the right shape. If you like Death Cab, you will like Narrow Stairs. Until and unless the band wants to give us a Great Reinvention, this works. Stream it at AOL.

New Mates Of State - "My Only Offer"

thumbnail: New Mates Of State -

Make this advance track two from noted child-rearing bloggers/indie rock couple Mates Of State's Re-Arrange Us. Maybe not as memorably melodic as the outstanding "Get Better," but it's not for lack of arrangement: "My Only Offer" builds bells, glockenspiels, horns on top of a simple two-chord piano figure, with Kori and Jason's vocals swapping on the verses, harmonizing on the hook, hitting the callback/echoes later. All in all pretty pop, but the story here's in the lyrics, two lovers maybe not so much in love, slogging through the dulled luster, trying anyway. The chorus: "Oh, It's my only offer / stifled copies of myself / as someone else." Gives a little more resonance to the melody, innit.

Phosphorescent Covers Nick Cave

thumbnail: Phosphorescent Covers Nick Cave

We enjoyed it mightily when Matthew Houck, aka Phosphorescent, added his "Little Boxes" to the Weeds canon. He also does something worth the while with Nick Cave's "Right Now I'm A-Roaming." Houck's hushed rendition removes the swagger of the original, but he manages to infuse it with enough hoarse, on-the-road grit to save it from becoming just another saccharine folk tune. You can take a listen at MySpace, and please note that this accompanying photo is Houck a-roaming at Stonehenge last month. (Speaking of the Ancients, Cave is still roaming, looking hella intense during that fateful "Night Of The Lotus Eaters.")

Adem Covers Low

thumbnail: Adem Covers Low

When we showed you Fridge bassist Adem Ilhan strumming-out dEUS's "Hotellounge (Be the Death of Me)," we made sure to mention the UK-based multi-instrumental crooner is also covering any number of indie rock classics (a dozen to be exact) for his third solo record, Takes. For the finale, long after Bedhead and PJ, and Pinback, and the Pumpkins, he does a delicate cover of Low's "Laser Beam," which you first heard on 2001's Things We Lost In The Fire. Time flies.

Foo Fighters Enter The Funniest Tour Rider
Contest

Foo Fighters Enter The Funniest Tour Rider Contest

This is an imaginary contest that we just made up. Before today, the all-time champion was Iggy Pop, compliments of his tour manager guy Jos Grain (example: "2 X HEAVY DUTY STRAIGHT CYMBAL STANDS. But we are equal opportunity employers, so gay stands may apply also. [They won't get the fucking job, though..."]). And actually, after today Iggy continues to hold on to that title. But second place may just belong to a boy named Foo. The Smoking Gun tracked down the hot doc in all its cheeky glory, although this excerpt was properly identified as blockquotable by Gawker.
