Vampire Weekend/Avi Buffalo @ Art Theater, Long

Vampire Weekend/Avi Buffalo @ Art Theater, Long Beach 11/2/09

Vampire Weekend's sold out show at the Art Theater of Long Beach followed a couple of secret-ish L.A. outings -- at the former site of Madame Wong's on Halloween (Ezra was dressed as Jon Gosselin, or a douchebag, or both) and at Hollenbeck Rec Center the following day -- but Koenig called last night the first "official" show of their California itinerary (and first "movie theater" gig). Local buzz band and recent Sub Pop signees Avi Buffalo (grab an MP3 below) were there to open things up, while Ice Cream Man stuck around afterward to make sure people went home with frozen treats. Between those bookmarks, VW dedicated "Horchata" to Lola's, the Mexican restaurant across the street, and stated a number of times that they dig California. Of course, the set included "California English." As far as new ones, they also did Contra's "White Sky," "Holiday," "Run," and "Cousins." Along with Andrew Youssef's terrific photos, check out the setlist and newly expanded tour itinerary.

ALICIA KEYS: Try Sleeping With A Broken Heart
(Pepsi Music Performance)

I just checked out AlwayzFunkyFresh and saw that ALICIA KEYS just gave an incredible performance of her beautiful next single TRY SLEEPING WITH A BROKEN HEART for Pepsi Music. Alicia really knows how to deliver a ballad so that you really feel it! I really hope the track gets an amazing video to go with it, the one for the equally fabulous first single DOESN'T MEAN ANYTHING was pretty but lacking something.

Also, we're gonna have to wait just a little bit longer for the new album THE ELEMENT OF FREEDOM, which has been pushed back to December 15th, I'm sure it will be worth the wait!

Rihanna - Wait Your Turn - Video Premiere

If Rated R remains to get a November release remains to be seen. But from this just leaked video to Wait Your Turn it's painfully clear that the days of Rihanna being a club queen are long gone. (For good?) It's very gritty and edgy, something that we usually like in acts like The Knife and Grace Jones. But something here just seems off we are sad to say. Bring the beat back Rihanna.

Athlete Black Swan

Since rising to prominence seven years ago with the spirited, electro-tinged, indie-pop of their Mercury-nominated debut, ?Vehicles And Animals?, Athlete have established themselves among the UK’s finest songsmiths. The south east Londoners have sold more than a million copies of their three hit albums (the other two being 2005’s ?Tourist? and 2007’s ?Beyond The Neighbourhood?), [...]

New Small Black - "Kings Of Animals"

New Small Black -

When premiering Small Black's "Bad Lover," we accompanied the MP3 with the catchy J&MC-echoing pop tune "Despicable Dogs," its Washed Out remix, and plenty of background information on the duo of ex-Slowlander Josh Kolenik and Ryan Heyner and their self-titled EP. Now Transparent's releasing a "Despicable Dogs" 7" that includes a new song, "Kings Of Animals." On the b-side "Kings" picks up the tempo a bit and manages to make me think of Conor Oberst fronting Guided By Voices for an elegiac end-of-the-night anthem.
